Energy and climate at Klingele
Full steam ahead into the future
We are taking big steps towards an even more sustainable future. With high-performance power generation systems, we produce more than half of the electricity we consume ourselves. We achieve this by combining different energy concepts. From the refuse-derived fuel plant in Weener to biomass energy in Strasbourg and our own hydroelectric power plant in Ribeira near Nova Campina. Over 90% of the electricity we produce is utilised in our own plants, while surplus into the public grid.
Our energy portfolio from renewable energies
Our paper mills are the centrepiece of our production. As they account for over 90% of our electricity consumption, they are also the focus of our energy-saving measures. Self-generated energy from renewable sources makes us less dependent on fossil fuels and promotes a more sustainable industry standard.

Raw materials at Klingele
In 2022, we processed over 525,000 tonnes of waste paper to produce corrugated cardboard. At the Weener and Strasbourg locations, we produce paper made entirely from recycled materials. In Nova Campina, 30% of the fibres originate from recovered paper. For the fresh fibre content, we rely on certified sources and forests that are managed according to recognised standards. We use starch as a raw material to increase the strength of both paper with virgin fibres and recycled paper.
Water at Klingele
Water is an important resource in paper production. By researching new sources of water for our production, we are endeavouring to use it more efficiently. One project in Weener involves the treatment of municipal waste water for use in the paper mill. Another project is investigating the utilisation of regionally available surface water for industry and agriculture.
Recycling at Klingele
Our aim is to reduce waste and operate an efficient recycling system. One of the ways we achieve this is by feeding unavoidable paper waste directly into our own recycling plants. In 2022, we were able to recycle or reuse a total of 55,591 tonnes of waste paper from the Klingele plants.
Energy supply at Klingele
We continuously invest in renewable energy sources. For example, we cover a growing proportion of our own energy requirements across the group with solar energy. Other energy sources include an RDF plant in Weener, biomass utilisation in Strasbourg and Nova Campina, hydropower in Ribeira, a wind turbine in Weener and biogas utilisation in Weener and Strasbourg.
Sustainability is the future.
Klingele takes responsibility for the environment, society and its employees, prioritising recycling, the circular economy and renewable energies – and supports your sustainability goals.
