The path to the optimum print image: packaging for Ovomaltine and Rosativo
According to a study by the GfK consumer research association, 70% of purchasing decisions are made at the point of sale. Packaging is therefore becoming a highly coveted advertising space; our projects with the brands Ovomaltine and Rosativo show what is possible.
The cult brand Ovomaltine stands for enjoyment ‘made in Switzerland’: the drink with the unique flavour of malt and cocoa was developed over 100 years ago; however, a wide range of products, from breakfast drinks to spreads, has since been created. The range also includes small tins of delicious, crunchy chocolate cream that are sold to food service providers, cash and carry stores and hotel chains in Switzerland. Our customer, who fills this chocolate cream, already had a packaging with the required product properties – albeit for a different product. The new packaging for Ovomaltine had to be equally stable to survive the logistics chain well, and it had to run on the same packaging machine. With eye-catching printing, it should also whet the appetite for the contents.
Developing a flawless and attractive print image is no trivial task: the advantages and disadvantages of different printing processes have to be weighed up against each other; in addition, the type of paper, the substrate, the drying process, the type of corrugation and the specific features of our machines all have an influence on the final appearance of the packaging. At Ovomaltine, digital printing was initially favoured, but ultimately the decision was made in favour of flexo direct printing, which delivers excellent printing results. We printed the packaging on our large flatbed die-cutter in Grunbach with its six inking units; five colours plus coating make the tray for Ovomaltine a real gem.
Matching wave, attractive colour: lifestyle packaging for Rosativo
The development of the print image for the packaging of the Rosativo aperitif drink was a particularly challenging project. Rosativo is still relatively new on the market and is sold in retail packs of 6. The drink is in the medium to higher price segment, so the packaging needed to be visually appealing.
We provided our customer, the manufacturer and bottler of Rosativo, with comprehensive advice on the design of the packaging for this project: Among other things, he had initially requested a brownish tone for the colour of the bottle contents on the packaging. Our counter-proposal, a more reddish colour, was much more attractive when printed and suited the product better. We also removed a gold-coloured halftone screen from the label image on the bottle. This makes the label look much calmer and clearer - and details like this often make all the difference. The use of coated paper also ensured a better gloss effect and a high-quality look.
Another important element in achieving the optimum print image was our selection of the right shaft: the EE shaft has a very small and thin shaft profile - this enabled us to minimise the washboard effect. In the double combination, it still offers the necessary stability. By using four colours and varnish, we have optimally exploited the potential of our inline machine in Grunbach for this "eye-catcher" - and achieved a result that the customer was very satisfied with.
