Sustainable concept, elegant design: cake packaging for BÄKO
Selling cakes in bakeries and cake shops is a delicate business – and requires not only a sure instinct but also the right packaging. It must be food-safe, stable, environmentally friendly and promotionally effective. Our solution for this would convince any cake lover...
BÄKO is a cooperatively organised association and global procurement specialist for bakeries and confectioners. BÄKO handles the global procurement of a wide range of products, including packaging, for its members, around 13,500 bakers and confectioners. The regional co-operatives are responsible for the optimal supply and logistics of all goods right down to the individual bakeries and are their contact partners in all matters.
This means that BÄKO has its finger on the pulse when it comes to consumer trends and the needs of its members. In addition to the "classics" of cost optimisation and handling, this also includes the topic of sustainability: plastic materials are on the decline; preference is increasingly being given to mono-material packaging. This is due to consumers who are increasingly sensitised to sustainability, but also to higher licensing costs that are incurred for composite materials.

BÄKO has been our customer for a long time. Our development team presented BÄKO with a one-piece packaging in the current trend style and BÄKO was immediately interested and had a decorative motif designed in white, which gives the packaging both a natural and attractive design. A good example of how the customer's product and design idea can result in a product that is customised to consumer preferences. In practical terms, it not only enables quick handling in the bakery, but also takes up less space in the storage room than its two-part counterpart. It is lined inside and out with Kraftliner, guarantees food safety and fully complies with BRCGS hygiene standards.
Above all, however, the new cake packaging scores points for its environmental friendliness: the material is 100 per cent recyclable. Both the raw material and our production facilities are FSC®-certified (FSC® C108153).
We came up with our concept at exactly the right time: BÄKO was already in the process of adding more and more products such as soup or ice-cream tubs made from recycled material to its stock range in order to expand its so-called "brown line". The new cake packaging therefore fitted perfectly into the portfolio.
