Super Cobb: our all-rounder for plant packaging
The plant trade is booming, whether in-store or online: after all, everyone wants their home to be beautiful. However, packaging plants is a sensitive matter due to their moisture and fragility; at the same time, suppliers want environmentally friendly packaging for their natural products. These are requirements that we optimally meet with our Super Cobb paper.
The printing on the packaging plays an important role here, because up to 80% of purchasing decisions are also based on colour (study by Loyola University Maryland, USA). Corrugated board packaging is therefore ideal for use in the marketing mix due to its excellent printability. Combined with its advantages in terms of sustainability and cost-effectiveness, corrugated board is the ideal packaging material.
Karma Plants is a grower of anthuriums and other tropical houseplants based in the Netherlands. Its greenhouses cover an area of around 10 hectares and the company exports its plants throughout Europe. Karma Plants originally used punched corrugated boxes made from kraftliner for the stationary trade and shipping of its plants. This consists of virgin fibres and no longer fitted in with Karma Plants' very consistent recycling and sustainability strategy: the company produces and processes its energy in one of the largest floating solar plants in Europe. A modern cultivation system and the reuse of all water according to the closed-loop principle also prevent the waste of this precious resource.
With this in mind, Karma Plants was looking for a sustainable solution for its packaging without having to compromise on product protection.
Water-repellent, stable and recyclable
With Super Cobb, we have developed a paper at our paper mill in Weener that literally rolls off all the challenges of packaging plants: It is more environmentally friendly as it is made from 100% recycled waste paper. Its water-repellent properties, based on a special formulation, ensure that the packaging is highly stable and thus optimally protects the delicate plants during transport. In addition, the packaging can also be printed on attractively without any problems; sustainability and moisture resistance therefore do not stand in the way of high advertising effectiveness. The printing provides information about the packaging and thus increases transparency for the end customer.
Due to its product properties, Super Cobb is not only suitable for packaging plants, but also fruit and vegetables as well as frozen or chilled food. Thanks to its ISEGA certification, it can also be used for packaging dry and non-greasy foods.
Super Cobb supports growth course and sustainability strategy
There is great interest in the Super Cobb on the market: more and more products are being sold over the Internet and consumers are increasingly expecting more environmentally friendly packaging from suppliers. The advantages of the Super Cobb have clearly convinced Karma Plants, and the response from its own customers has also been consistently positive. This means that Karma Plants is ideally equipped for its growth trajectory, which the company has embarked on, particularly after the coronavirus pandemic subsided. Karma Plants wants to further increase its market share in Europe and is now also planning to expand its online sales.
This further increases the demands on the stability of the packaging: Whereas in stationary retail, the boxes are loaded into the lorries open at the top before they set off on their journey to their recipients, in online sales the packaging must enclose the plant tightly, but at the same time provide a buffer on the inside so that it is not crushed.
