Sending plants by post

A group of boxes on a table with plants in front of it

Have you ever found a plant delivery in your letterbox? The Dutch start-up Treemore has turned this into a business model – and we ensure that the delicate contents arrive safely at the customer's home...

The Dutch company Treemore ships plants from all over the world in sturdy, sustainable packaging by letter post. The plants, which include coffee plants, orange trees and even redwoods, the largest living trees on Earth, can be purchased as home decorations or gifts. A card is always enclosed with information about the plant and tips on how to make it bloom. €1 of the proceeds from each plant goes to soil remediation, to restore depleted soils to fertility. To this end, founder Maarten van den Berg is working with Justdiggit, a Dutch foundation with a worldwide network: it is committed to a recovery of vegetation and climate in various regions of the world through a wide range of measures.

So much commitment to sustainability is no coincidence: van den Berg was previously a consultant in the field of renewable energies. Treemore also wanted to score points with a sustainable product range and convey the important message of how much potential soil reclamation offers. Accordingly, the plants are grown in pots made of polylactide acid (PLA) and the plant pots are 3D printed using renewable energy.

Plant shipping packaging for the letterbox

"What really sets Klingele apart, apart from its creativity, is its flexibility and focus on sustainability."

Maarten Van den Berg, Managing Director of Treemore

Environmentally friendly and attractive - and fits in every letterbox

Our team in Nijmegen has developed an environmentally friendly and stable plant shipping packaging for this ingenious product concept: with a maximum height of three centimetres, it is so flat that it fits in a letterbox, but offers enough space inside for the plant and does not crush it. The shipping packaging is stable, lightweight and recyclable. The integrated window is made of PLA, as are the pots. The packaging is attractively printed inside and out with matching motifs. Delivered flat, the packaging can be folded and assembled in a few simple steps. The plant pots can later be disposed of with household waste and the packaging with waste paper. Treemore ordered 20,000 shipping packs in an initial order; 20,000 more have already been ordered when demand increased.

This is not the start-up's first collaboration with Klingele: two years ago, our team in Nijmegen developed larger packaging for five small trees from five different continents for sale in bricks-and-mortar stores. It was a hobby project for the founder - still under the company name MountGreen: "I organised the project on a part-time basis at the time, with small quantities; nevertheless, Klingele supported me in an impressive way," recalls van den Berg. At the end of 2020, MountGreen merged with the Dutch Flower Group, which suddenly gave the small start-up access to e-commerce and logistics capacities. MountGreen became Treemore - and van den Berg became a full-time entrepreneur.

"What really characterises Klingele, apart from its creativity, is its flexibility and focus on sustainability. This is important to us, and Klingele is a good fit for us," comments van den Berg. "Above all, however, Klingele is characterised by its high level of commitment to the customer - even if, as with us at the beginning, it's not yet about large quantities. And their developers are always open to further adaptations. If the collaboration is going so well - why should I look for an alternative?"

If flexibility, sustainability and innovative strength are characteristics that also fit in with your company concept, we should talk to you - we look forward to hearing from you!
