Safe, stable, flexible and environmentally friendly: packaging for special cases
Weighing 20 kg, technically sensitive, high-quality – and in high demand: the young Ludwigsburg-based company instagrid has hit a real nerve in the market with its mobile energy storage system. With our plastic-free, stable and intelligent shipping packaging, it reaches its customers safely.
Forestry or construction work, events on greenfield sites or even natural disasters: In many situations, a mobile power supply is indispensable. In 2018, the start-up instagrid from Ludwigsburg launched a new solution for this, with the start of series production with a first customer in spring 2021. The compact instagrid ONE max battery unit is the result of a technological innovation: it works silently, is free from toxic emissions and is easy to transport.
The power pack offers a peak output of 18,000 W, supplies devices with energy for an entire working day and is made from recycled aluminium and plastic. The 20 kg "power pack" soon became very popular. instagrid ONE max is of interest to the construction and event industry, emergency services such as the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), fire brigade and police, among others. For its performance combined with its robust and high-quality design, the instagrid ONE max 2022 received the German Design Award (Gold) in the Excellent Product Design (Energy) category.
Sustainable and extremely robust packaging concept
Production takes place in Hungary, from where it is sent to a central warehouse and then to the customer. Postal dispatch is only possible because the product concept allows the cells to be separated under 100 W hours, as the lithium-ion cells in the battery are classified as hazardous goods. A topic on which we at Klingele are happy to advise you and have already been able to demonstrate our expertise with other solutions. Thanks to our BAM-approved test laboratory, we can support you not only with advice on development and production, but also with the approval of your hazardous goods packaging.
instagrid currently produces around 10,000 emergency power units per year - and the trend is clearly rising. Instagrid ONE max is a high-quality and sophisticated product and is priced at around 3,000 euros (incl. VAT). Safety and stability were therefore the key criteria for the shipping packaging, which also had to comply with the stricter UPS guidelines. In order to ensure maximum efficiency and sustainability throughout the entire logistics chain, the product had to be compact, easy to pack and easy to return. Last but not least, instagrid wanted to use only one packaging material that could be returned to the recycling cycle.
Within a week, our development team conjured up a packaging concept based on a product dummy that completely won over our customer: it easily withstood all drop tests and subsequent testing by instagrid, and as a single-material solution made fromrecyclable Wellpappe, it also offered the desired sustainability. Two easy-to-insert cushions made of Wellpappe provide all-round protection for the robust yet technically sensitive device.
One of the pads also serves as a removal aid, allowing the device to be cleanly inserted into and removed from the box. A cut-out in the packaging lid provides direct access to the metal handle, allowing the device to be carried in the packaging. The brown outer cover with a white pictogram is deliberately kept visually simple - however, sales partners can have the packaging printed with their logo.
Competent partner with a hands-on mentality
The customer was just as enthusiastic about our solution as they were about our approach: "We wanted to bring our product to market as quickly as possible, but as a young company we have limited resources and capacities ourselves - and of course no expertise in packaging. We therefore needed a reliable partner who understood our concept, provided expert advice and acted quickly and flexibly," comments Felix Fuchs, product designer at instagrid.
We couldn't have found a better partner than Klingele for this: The entire process from initial contact to delivery was extremely efficient and solution-oriented and characterised by a genuine hands-on mentality. Finally, the geographical proximity to Klingele has always made development loops and sampling possible at short notice.
Felix Fuchs, product designer from instagrid
Our packaging plays a significant role in instagrid's business growth: "Packaging is an important part of our service and must support our processes as well as customer loyalty," explains Fuchs. "In this context, sustainability was also a key aspect for us: some of our competitors package their products in plastic and polystyrene; with our alternative, we not only stand out favourably, but also help end customers to dispose of the packaging."
instagrid ONE max is therefore a good way to get to the customer - but it doesn't always have to be such heavyweights. You are about to market your new product and ask yourself: "How can we get it to the customer safely and undamaged?" Is itpackaging for hazardous goods? Or you already have packaging - but it's not environmentally friendly? You'll be amazed at what's possible with Wellpappe! Get in touch with us - together with our creative teams, we will develop the perfect, sustainable solution for you!
