Klingele joins global climate protection initiative SBTi
Klingele corrugated board plants commit themselves to SBTi's ambitious climate targets.
Limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C, halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050 – these are the goals of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The four German corrugated cardboard plants of the Klingele Paper & Packaging Group have now joined the initiative. This means that Klingele is committing to science-based climate targets as part of its sustainable corporate governance.
The Klingele Paper & Packaging Group has been implementing successful climate protection projects for many years. ‘Our commitment to the SBTi in our four German corrugated cardboard plants underlines the seriousness of our sustainability efforts. We have been implementing energy projects for over 20 years. Now we are taking a decisive step forward to establish targeted climate management. At a time when some companies are postponing their climate targets, we are convinced that sustainable business practices and economic success go hand in hand,’ says Dr Jan Klingele, Managing Director of the Klingele Paper & Packaging Group.
Reducing emissions as an investment in the future
Klingele's four German corrugated cardboard plants have committed to setting both short-term and long-term emissions reduction targets by 2025 in line with the SBTi's science-based net zero targets. Alexandre McKay, Sustainability Manager of the Klingele Paper & Packaging Group, categorises this commitment: "We are working on implementing the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), improving corporate carbon accounting and automating our sustainability reporting to ensure that our climate targets are transparent and measurable in the future. This not only benefits us, but also supports our customers in achieving their own climate targets." Regular reports on the company's progress provide additional transparency in sustainable corporate management.
Equipped for future sustainability requirements
Innovations are essential for sustainable economic success. This is why Klingele has invested over 480 million euros in modern machinery and an efficient and sustainable energy supply since 2011. The company has also established a systematic approach and created a space for creative idea development with customers in the so-called Co-Creation Arena in order to accelerate its own innovation management. Klingele is also focussing on less established markets abroad and combining the growth potential there with sustainable measures for the region.
SBTi - science-based climate protection
The Science Based Targets initiative is a non-profit organisation that supports companies and financial institutions worldwide to help combat the climate crisis through science-based emission reduction targets. Founded by CDP, the UN Global Compact, WRI and WWF, the SBTi develops standards, tools and guidelines to ensure that the targets set are in line with the requirements to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C and to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. To date, more than 8,000 companies - like Klingele - have already committed to setting science-based emission reduction targets as part of the SBTi.
