Digital Product Passport - transparency for precise CO₂ balancing

As part of a project to improve carbon accounting in the packaging industry, the Klingele Paper & Packaging Group has developed and successfully tested a Digital Product Passport (DPP) together with research partners.

What is the Digital Product Passport?

The DPP is a cross-company digital platform that precisely calculates the carbon footprint of corrugated cardboard products along the entire value chain. The DPP integrates actors and systems that were previously not sufficiently taken into account, thus reducing existing gaps ("blind spots") in CO₂ accounting.

Advantages and added value

  • Transparent and standardised data collection that goes beyond existing ERP and MES systems
  • Improved data quality with regard to CO₂ accounting.
  • Efficient fulfilment of regulatory requirements, such as the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive).

Outlook and next steps

The results of the project lay the foundation for

  • The establishment of effective governance structures for data exchange.
  • The further integration of advanced digital technologies for the continuous optimisation and automation of CO₂ accounting.
