Delicate products safely packaged: Corrugated board-based packaging for the e-commerce of plants

Plants have long been part of the range of goods offered by e-commerce. According to a study by Bitkom, one in five Internet users had already purchased bouquets, seedlings or indoor and outdoor plants online by 2016. However, if these are to reach their destination in top quality and in one piece, they need an extra layer of protection in the form of the right packaging. A new development in our success story with ‘kräuterfeld.de’ shows how this works.

As a result of the coronavirus crisis, e-commerce has established itself as an additional supply infrastructure. In a survey of around 2,500 consumers conducted by the German E-Commerce and Distance Selling Trade Association (Bundesverband E-Commerce und Versandhandel Deutschland e.V.), half of the respondents stated that they would order more online in the future due to their experiences during the coronavirus crisis.

Environmentally friendly packaging for e-commerce of plants in corrugated cardboard boxes

The range of goods available online has been growing continuously for years and has long included plants. In 2017, online sales of garden products - compared to all stationary sales channels - accounted for 41 per cent of total sales. Our customer Lemberghof recognised this trend towards e-commerce around ten years ago and serves the market with its online shop "kräuterfeld.de" to serve a steadily growing customer base. The range includes over 60 varieties from A for andean berry physalis to Z for lemon thyme. kräuterfeld.de developed very dynamically after cautious beginnings and grew by a further 30 per cent during the coronavirus pandemic: many consumers who previously bought in a garden centre tried out online orders during the lockdown - and have since become loyal fans of kräuterfeld.de. kräuterfeld.de since then.

Most of kräuterfeld.de's parcels consist of several plants, which are dispatched freshly harvested directly from the bed. The clientele is discerning: kräuterfeld.de supplies quality-orientated customers who attach great importance to healthy nutrition and fresh products. To ensure that the delicate and tender plants reach their recipients undamaged and with guaranteed freshness, they need reliable protection during transport - especially as handling the parcels in transit can be quite tough. As kräuterfeld.de works completely ecologically and does not use plastic, the packaging should of course also match the natural and valuable contents - our recyclable and customised packaging solutions are simply ideal.

High product protection - customers are delighted

The sleeve packaging that we developed for kräuterfeld.de offers stability and comprehensive product protection; it is also recyclable - making it easy for the consumer to dispose of in the waste paper bin. It secures the herb pot with cut-outs on the right and left and is closed at the top of the plant. This means that the plant does not even fall out when the package is turned upside down - and is not crushed. Both the outer packaging and the sleeves are delivered flat and are erected and sealed at the customer's premises.
