Vice Presidency of FEFCO

The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers strengthens the sector's position as providers of sustainable packaging solutions

Remshalden/Stuttgart, May 2012 – Dr. Jan Klingele, Managing Partner of the Klingele Group, has been named as the new Vice President of the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO). The presidency of the federation has been taken on by Roberto Villaquiran, CEO of the European Packaging Division of Smurfit Kappa. Dr. Jan Klingele is already the president of the German Corrugated Board Federation, having just been confirmed for his second term.

Klingele feels that one of FEFCO's most important tasks is to strengthen the image and position of the corrugated board sector within the European market. With regard to this, the federation has initiated a campaign with the aim of making potential decision-makers at European institutions and companies more aware of the advantages and strengths of the sector and its products. "The issue of sustainability has become significantly more important to companies, and not just with regard to their own products but in relation to the entire supply chain," stresses Dr. Jan Klingele. "This means that corrugated board packaging is an optimum solution for warehousing and logistics, since as well as being recyclable and thus really environmentally-friendly, corrugated board provides high levels of safety, product protection and hygiene. In addition, printing on corrugated board packaging is becoming increasingly attractive, which allows it to be used for marketing at points of sale. But many companies aren't aware of this, and I'm going to actively work towards increasing their awareness."

FEFCO was founded in 1952 and is based in Brussels. The federation represents around 500 companies with a total of 750 production sites, around 100,000 employees, and production of around 40 billion m2 of corrugated board each year. "Business in the corrugated board sector is becoming increasingly international, as we are seeing in the case of our own company." A few years ago, the Klingele Group founded the Blue Box Partners Alliance (www.blueboxpartners.eu) along with three corrugated cardboard manufacturers from France, Spain, and Belgium. Around 20% of their joint turnover comes from European customers. "It is therefore important for us to position our sector as providers of sustainable packaging solutions at a European level. With this in mind, FEFCO offers significant and interesting opportunities for networking and the exchange of information," adds Dr. Jan Klingele.
