Helping the environment – with 100 % recycled paper.

Protecting the environment is a core element of our corporate strategy, and we pursue this objective both in our sheet plants and at our paper mill. Our environmental policy extends beyond the actual manufacture of our products to cover pre- and post-manufacturing processes as well.

We were one of the first paper mills in Europe to be awarded certification in accordance with international environmental standards.

Our products are made from 100% waste paper and also bear the FSC® Recycling Seal. This is our guarantee that all our raw materials are secondary raw materials and that their origin is readily traceable.

Wastewater treatment plant

Water is an important natural resource – and a vital one for papermaking. Our state-of-the-art treatment plant purifies wastewater biologically in a two-stage process. Bacteria known as anaerobic digesters convert organic matter in the water into biogas. A combined heat and power plant then burns the gas, producing electricity and heat that are used in the paper mill, and completing the energy cycle.

Holistic energy concept

Paper production consumes a lot of energy, and so the natural way to round off the Weener paper mill’s energy concept was to build a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) power plant. Since mid 2008, Weener Energie has been supplying all the thermal energy required for paper drying. The result: a huge increase in energy efficiency. In turn, the RDF plant is fuelled with waste material from the paper mill. In addition, the plant saves 32 million cubic metres of natural gas and primary energy per year, which cuts annual CO2 emissions from fossil fuels by 55,000 tonnes – an undeniable and substantial contribution to environmental protection.
